Product Description
The next book in the thrilling New York Times bestselling series.
For years he has endured the endless trials and triumphs of a man whose skill and power could not be restrained. Battling ancient enemies, forging new alliances, and confronting the corruption within his own land, Gaius Octavian became a legendary man of war-and the rightful First Lord of Alera.
But now, the savage Vord are on the march, and Gaius must lead his legions to the Calderon Valley to stand against them-using all of his intelligence, ingenuity, and furycraft to save their world from eternal darkness.

I was reluctant to read this series because I thought it would be Tolkien’ish with overly described scenery and heavy character description but to my surprise it wasn’t! It was a roller coaster thrill ride full of action and intrigue. The development of the main character (Tavi) through out the series is excellent. If you’re a fan of fantasy and action try this series, Jim Butcher ALWAYS delivers.

I pre-ordered the final book in this series and was eagerly awaiting it’s arrival – showed up on Saturday at about 3 p.m., 8 p.m. that night I read the final pages… this entire series is worth every penny.
The author is very good at developing and growing his characters over time/across books – you want to root for the good guys whether human or not, and want to boo the bad guys… The storyline is more complex/deeper than it appears on the surface and actually requires some thought to fully appreciate. Think King Arthur in a different place and time… Epic.
For the [...] bucks I spent for the hard cover, beats the hell out of a movie… hmm…

I was quite pleased with the ending of Codex Alera series. The story finally comes full circle with the once simple boy, now in charge of defending the various people of Alera against the alien Vord. I do like that the author doesn’t try to keep everyone whole and safe. People are wrecked, cities plundered and destroyed and some characters who seemed to be in for the long haul, might not make it. This is the end.
That being said, I thought that there were a few things that made this somewhat of a rush. Of course, Tavi figures out something that no one else can do to save the day. And of course the enemy that was so smart all along and managed to destroy town and army after army finally meets her match. I had a little trouble believing the ending. But it was definitely worth it to get to the end. And there’s just enough of a plot thread to see, what happens after Tavi. I know that the author has stated that this is the end of the series but you never really know. There’s always a chance to dust off the world and see what he can do with hit. Good stuff. Worth the read.

This was by far the worst book in the series. It seems like Butcher got rushed, and had to finish the book in a hurry, there was not the richness & smoothness that existed in the previous books. The story seemed to skip around too much.
When it came to the ending, they kill the queen, and then story over. The epilogue just does not wrap up all the loose ends. What ever happen to the two furies that came out of the mountain? They say they will destroy the whole continent, but never explain what happens to them.
I don’t hate the book, and it was worth the $9 I spent, but it just was not that good of a book compared to the rest in the series.

He is got to be the most prolific author i’ve seen in a decade who can produce work of a quality that makes me just drooling for more.
This last (?) novel is a bit more complex than the others as it bounces back and forth between the different fronts and at times i sat there frustrated that he would bounce to the other strand while i was desperately wanting to see what happened in the current strand but alas, it is what it is. I did want to know more about Alera, but it makes sense to let it go.
hooray for authors who know how to make reading enjoyable again!
